Ioannis Orfanos

MD, MSc, PhD Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon, Nicosia General Hospital, Cyprus

Dr. Ioannis Orfanos is Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon. He is currently working at Makario Children’s Hospital, Nicosia. He teaches orthopaedics at the Medical School, University of Cyprus. He was the former Head of the Orthopaedic Department at King Salman Specialist Hospital, Hail, Saudi Arabia. Former Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedics at Agia Sofia Children’s Hospital, Athens, Greece. He was graduated from the Medical School of Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki. He took his Doctorate Diploma from the Medical School, University of Athens. Part of his doctoral thesis has been published at the Journal of Paediatric Orthopaedics. Master of Science Degree at Health Management, National School of Public Health, Athens. At his thesis that was published at the Journal of Ambulatory Surgery, he showed the costs and outcomes of the Paediatric Day Surgery Unit of Agia Sofia Children’s Hospital. Training at hip disorders at Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham and Diana Princess of Wales Children’s Hospital, Birmingham, UK. Fellowship in the method of Ilizarov at Ospedale Alessandro Manzoni, Lecco, Italy. His main scientific interest concerns the early detection and diagnosis of DDH using hip ultrasound. His training at baby hip ultrasound took place at Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital, UK and later at Landeskrankenhaus, Stolzalpe, Austria by Prof. R. Graf. He has license to practice musculoskeletal ultrasound (Ministry of Health, Greece). His research study is focused on the dilemma: “Baby hip ultrasound: Selective or Universal Screening?”. He tries to find out the financial burden of DDH screening at the National Health System of Greece. In 2010, at the Congress of the Orthopaedic Society of Macedonia and Thrace he took award for his e-poster entitled: “Congenital genu recurvatum with concomitant bilateral hip dysplasia. Case study”. He speaks English, German and French.
