Θεόδωρος Ελευθεριάδης

I graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki, Greece. During my specialization in Nephrology, I obtained my PhD, focusing on antigen presentation in hemodialysis patients. Additionally, I have served as a visiting investigator at the Immunology Department of the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA, USA, and as a visiting nephrologist in the Nephrology and Kidney Transplant Program at Hospital del Mar in Barcelona, Spain. Currently, I am a Professor of Nephrology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Thessaly in Larissa, Greece. In addition to my teaching and clinical responsibilities, I lead a research laboratory specializing in molecular medicine. I have published over 220 studies in journals indexed in PUBMED, accumulating more than 5,000 citations. In the majority of these publications, I have served as the first and corresponding author. My research interests focus on cellular responses to clinically relevant injurious insults, such as ischemia-reperfusion, hyperglycemia, and autoimmunity. I strongly believe that comparative biology—examining how different species respond to such insults—can offer valuable insights for developing novel therapeutic strategies for human diseases. A notable example is the natural resistance of hibernating species to ischemia-reperfusion injury.
